Lodge of Instruction - THE CHAMBER OF REFLECTION |
|
On January 2 Worshipful Brother Justin A. Duffy, Past Master of Wyllys – St. John's Lodge No. 4 and Research Member of the Philosophic Lodge of Research presented his 2011 PLR paper that examines the history and ancient usage of the Chamber of Reflection, the dark Chamber and set of symbols that helped our ancient Brothers confront and conquer the basic fears we all face. His presentation revealed the symbols of the Chamber and the philosophical lessons they teach and explored the sociological pressures that led to it's gradual withdrawal. As a window into the expansion and contraction of the Craft over the centuries he cited such contrasting examples as Colonial times, the Anti-Masonic party, Civil War, Occult revival of the 1920s, WWI and the return of American servicemen exposed to French Freemasonry, WWII and the great swelling of our ranks as the soldiers returned, the counter-culture 60s, to the slow growth of today. Brothers were left to consider if now may be the right time to reintegrate the practice. It was a very enlightening and education presentation. The first of many to come in 2012 as we continue our Masonic Education initiatives.
